about

I’m very excited to share “One (Many)”, the first single from my new album “Material Tropes”. A meditation on the singular and the collective, the track features the alto saxophone of Julie Kjaer, multi-layered drums played by Seb Rochford, the otherworldly cello of Ben Davis, bells by Maurizio Ravalico and myself on organ pedals, accordion and extra percussion. I had fun producing and mixing the track, even running some of it through my DL4 delay pedal which contributes its own digital feedback sound later on.
.
I’m also honoured to share Ruth Goller’s beautiful remix of the track which is the first B side, as well as a version I recorded at Heath Street Baptist Church with the wonderful Clive Bell for shakuhachi and organ. Lastly I have included “Many (One)” which the last track from the album and is itself a reinterpretation of “One (Many)”. One of the things I was interested in investigating in writing “Material Tropes” was the technique of canon, when one melodic line imitates another. “Many (One)” is based on a layering of 4 of Julie’s improvisations over “One (Many)”, creating a kind of meta canon between the first and last track of the record. Rather than bringing out the differences in the 4 improvisations, I mixed them in a way that blends them into one single yet multifaceted line with which Maurizio’s percussion and my piano enter into conversation.
.
“Material Tropes” by the Nonidentical is out on June 30th on the NONID Label.
