about

This EP is an exploration of the folkloric and the futuristic, an idealized imagining of the world through music, a playful look at seriousness and vice versa.
.
“Bijoulacra” is derived from word ‘bijoux’ meaning jewel or precious and ‘simulacra’ meaning infinitely repeatable copies of a given object. Stylistically it’s inspired by West African traditional music and yet it has its own unique rhythmic structure, one which is always inherently in tension with itself. Isorhythms occur on a small (3 against 4) and medium scale (7 against 8), which are emphasized at different times to give the illusion of stability without ever actually changing their relationship. As in much of the other music of the Nonidentical's forthcoming debut album “Material Tropes”, canon is used to generate the music’s main texture, in this case both in inversion (turning the melody upside down) and augmentation (stretching the melody out to double its usual length).
.
This track (the penultimate) is in conversation with the second track on the album, “White Collared Criminals”, itself a 4 part canon based on a variation of the same melody. Also in conversation is the acoustic and the digital - layered accordions and hand percussion on one side and synths and electronic drums on the other, underpinned by electric bass and furulja, a wooden recorder-like flute from Eastern Europe.
.
“Material Tropes” by the Nonidentical is out on June 30th on the NONID Label.
